Tech/Ops Sevcon
The development of Electric Vehicles has been given a new urgency by the growing need to tackle climate change.
For many firms, this presents new challenges and opportunities but one North East engineering business has been at the forefront of this technology making controls for electric vehicles since the 1960s.
Tech/Ops Sevcon, based in Gateshead, has almost 50 years experience in the industry. They are recognised as one of the world’s leaders in the design, manufacture and sale of microprocessor based controls for electric vehicles including Urban and Neighbourhood electric vehicles (UEV and NEV), fork lift trucks, aerial lifts, airport tractors and other battery powered vehicles. They also design and build other system components for battery powered vehicles, like gauges, power steering systems, chargers and DC/DC convertors.
Their vehicle controls are used to vary the speed and direction of travel, to integrate specialised safety functions and more fundamentally improve vehicle efficiency and to extend the operating range of the vehicle for a given battery charge.
With a long history of developing products for battery powered vehicles from fork lifts to underground mining vehicles, firms around the world are now looking to Sevcon to help them develop the next generation of electric cars.
Quality
Sevcon’s Millipak™ PMAC Controller was a vital part of the Electrobike that smashed the land speed record in the US for an electric powered motorcycle. Despite unfavourable conditions, the bike averaged 64.5mph over two runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats
The company’s new EspAC™ AC controller is setting new standards in versatility and reliability in the control of AC Induction and Permanent Magnet AC Motors.
They also supply a wide range of dashboard displays, power steering motors, battery chargers, DC/DC converters, hydraulic pumps and induction motors.
Working with the automotive industry, Tech/Ops Sevcon recognises that quality of service and product is essential to their customers. They are accredited to ISO9000 and work to the requirements of QS9000 and TS16949.
Tech/Ops Sevcon is dedicated to investment in design and development, evolving products and services to serve its present and future markets better. The company has a powerful history of innovation, application expertise and customer support. This means that the products are reliable and durable, with a low energy output and low lifetime costs.
- Parts designed by the company are also at the heart of Brammo’s Enertia electric bike and Aixam E City UEV.
- The Company’s products meet exacting standards and are used by Bacyrus in hazardous underground mining environments.
- Sevcon’s components are finding an increasingly broad market with plans for Sevcon’s GPAC high power controller to be installed in a fleet of Chinese buses.
- The company also provided controls for MIT’s Solar Electric Vehicle Team (SEVT) to compete in the world solar challenge.
Sevcon operates worldwide from their headquarters in Gateshead, UK, and from subsidiaries in France, Japan, Korea, and the USA. The company is listed on the NASDAQ and is better known in the US as Sevcon.
