Science in the driving seat
With world-leading stem cell and genetic research being carried out at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear is a focus for the rapidly expanding healthcare and life sciences sector. In North East England this has a turnover of more than £4 billion a year and employs over 170,000 people.
The Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (Cels), based in Newcastle, is driving the sector’s growth through its work in co-ordinating research and development with commercial potential. Its HealthConnect network brings together professionals and organisations to share knowledge and collaborate on business opportunities.
Newcastle Science City has the ambition to make the area one of the top world sites for the integration of science and economic development. Towards that aim it has four key themes: stem cells and genetic sciences; ageing and health; energy and environment; and molecular engineering. These build on the research strengths of Newcastle, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
Science City is developing a multi-million pound campus in the centre of Newcastle, which will act as a hub for research while also offering business premises, incubators and other facilities.
In the digital field is another Centre of Excellence, Codeworks, which is located in Sunderland. This harnesses innovative ideas with commercial potential in fields such as electronic games, new media, social networking and mobile data. Meanwhile Sunderland Software City is driving forward enterprise growth in the field of business software.
Sunderland is also the home of Nissan Motor Manufacturing, which makes one in five of all cars produced in the UK. Sunderland University’s Institute of Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (Amap) acts as a catalyst for research and development in the car industry. Among its initiatives is Digital Factory, which promotes computer-aided design and automated manufacturing systems.
Tyne and Wear has become an important location for trials of electric vehicles and the roll-out of the first vehicle charging infrastructure in the world.
Qurios, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a 3D animation and graphics company that has built a strong reputation in the TV comedy sector. It uses the latest digital technology to combine the skills of animation, illustration and design, with its work featuring in games, TV commercials and music videos.
