Why North East England?
The Place To Invest
North East England is a centre for some of the most innovative and fastest growing industries in the world, backed by excellent sector support organisations.
There are extensive collaboration networks, cutting edge research institutions and world-renowned university departments that are working closely with businesses to develop their technologies and nurture their success.
The area is a driving force in sectors such as new and renewable energy and low carbon technology, chemicals, printable electronics and nanotechnology, automotive and advanced manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, and digital media and animation.
Centres of Excellence for process industry innovation, healthcare and life sciences, new and renewable energy and digital media and animation play a key role in identifying and developing new technologies with strong commercial potential. They offer R&D facilities and business support services to enable companies to develop and succeed.
More than 500 leading international companies are located in the area. They include Nissan, Procter and Gamble, Sage, GlaxoSmithKline, Sabic, and Clipper Windpower. Their presence and the ground-breaking projects in which many are involved, have turned the North East into one of the most dynamic parts of the European Economic Area – the world’s largest trading bloc.
The North East is, for example, home to 58% of the UK’s petrochemical industry, while a third of all the country’s pharmaceutical production is carried out in the area. Its supply chain of automotive component manufacturers comprises around 220 companies, and the world’s largest offshore wind turbine has been developed here.
A thriving cluster of creative and digital media firms is found in the area, and according to a study by the London Business School there are more high technology start-ups in the North East than anywhere else in the UK outside London.
These companies enjoy one of the best transport and communications infrastructures in the UK, with two international airports and three main ports. And the quality of life for their employees has made the North East one of the most attractive areas of the UK to live and work.
