North East England has one of the most impressive records of engineering excellence in the world.
The expertise and skills found throughout the area rank among the finest in the world. But the engineering industries of the North East have been rapidly evolving in recent years, and now offer a formidable range of capabilities in both conventional and leading edge fields of manufacturing.
To ensure these industries remain at the forefront of global change, the area’s universities have developed specialist research and teaching skills to meet the changing needs and demands of companies.
Newcastle University, for example, has the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering which is ranked as one of the 10 best research departments in the UK.
Within the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Sunderland University is the highly regarded Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice (AMAP). This has close links to industry and is involved in technology transfer and ground-breaking projects on such fronts as electric vehicles.
Durham, Northumbria and Teesside Universities also have excellence in cutting edge areas of engineering and undertake research in collaboration with industry.
One North East provides considerable support to the engineering industries through the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) and sector productivity teams.
The business support extends to the marine industry through the £2.3 million Marine Design Centre, which offers a global showcase for the skills and technologies offered by the North East.
