Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles
Overview

North East England is at the centre of electric vehicle manufacturing industry in the UK and its vision is to become a world leader in research and development for the industry.
It is envisaged that the automotive sector and its related supply chain could soon be worth close to £1 billion in the North East, with access to further opportunities across the UK.
It has been chosen by Nissan as the location of the mother plant for the company’s electric car battery production in Europe.
And it has the status of being the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area for Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles.
Regional development agency One North East is investing in a number of infrastructure and R&D projects.
The North East is, for example, to have the first comprehensive network of electric vehicle charging points in the country.
And important trials are taking place. One involves a large range of electric vehicles being road-tested at a state-of-the-art research and development centre in Sunderland.
Another has involved giving hundreds of North East people the chance to experience driving electric cars, in vehicles delivered to the region by Cenex, the UK’s Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell Technologies.
At Sunderland, Durham and Newcastle Universities research facilities and specialist courses have been established. Gateshead College has a £5.5 million Skills Academy that includes a facility for training on electric vehicles.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis says: “The North East has a real opportunity to lead the way in the low carbon revolution.”
