North East England has a growing cluster of successful computer games companies employing around 400 people.
Driv3r and Street Racing Syndicate, two of the top five best-selling games in the United States in 2004, were designed by companies in the region.
Teesside University is ranked as the best new university for teaching quality and has more than 1,000 students on the UK’s fastest growing computer games courses. It has entered into an agreement with Shanghai University to collaborate on a degree and masters programme in this field, based at the Middlesbrough campus.
Codeworks, the region’s Centre of Excellence for digital media and technology, has set up GameHorizon. This brings publishers and games industry experts to North East England to work with the region’s companies.
A key activity of GameHorizon is focused on developing collaboration and long-term strategic partnerships between businesses. It is also promoting the region’s games sector, offering support for attendance at international trade conferences, and is identifying research and skills gaps.
